Wusthof Classic Review:

The Wusthof Classic 8-piece knife set includes Eight High Quality/Performance Kitchen Knives; each of which is precision forged from a single blank of high carbon, stain resistant steel.

Wusthof employs a very labor-intensive and intricate process to create each knife in the Classic line. The process involves 38-manufacturing steps by highly skilled craftsmen.
Made: Solingen, Germany.

Blade - Forged, high-carbon stainless steel blades are hardened to maintain a sharp edge. Wusthof's newest state of the art technology incorporates a new computer controlled method for putting the edge on Classic knives. This technology allows for an exacting edge from the tip of the knife down to the heel of the knife. With this newer precision, the knives are made sharper to 14 degrees per side for a total of 28 degrees. The knives are now sharper and this refinement increases the sharpness retention because exacting angles and edges last longer than edges sharpened by hand. The result is a knife that is 30% sharper and the ICP (Initial Cutting Performance) lasts twice as long.

Handle - Traditional style handle. Knife is designed with full tang for perfect balance and includes an ergonomic triple-riveted, high-impact, composition handle that will not break down or wear out.

Knife Block - Made of Oak, the block stands on rubber feet designed to protect counter surfaces from scratching and to keep the knife block firmly in place.

Care - Dishwasher safe, but better to hand wash and immediately dry. Best to use a soft sponge.

Warranty - Wusthof knives carry a lifetime guarantee.

About the 5 knives in the Classic 8 piece:

The Classic 8 piece knife set with Oak block includes five kitchen knives:

Wusthof Classic 6 inch Sandwich Knife - Individually this knife sells for around $81 on Amazon. It's made with a thin, narrow blade with flared tip and is best for slicing sandwiches, meat and fruit.

Wusthof Classic 8 inch Chefs Knife - This Wusthof Classic 8 inch chef knife costs around $119 individually. The heavy 8-inch blade of this definitive model provides enough heft to allow the knife rather than the cook to do the cutting labor, but is more maneuverable than larger models.

Wusthof Classic 8 inch Bread Knife - This bread knife costs around $89 if purchased individually. Knife is made with a long serrated blade and a triangular tip. Pronounced serration on the 8" blade is ideal for cutting through tough crusts without undue pressure. The knife's length and triangular tip make it perfect for slicing both long and round loaves.

Wusthof Classic 4.5 inch Utility Knife -Wusthof's classic utility knife costs around $54 on Amazon if bought individually. This knife is great for small and intermediate cutting jobs; great for chopping vegetables and paring fruit.

Wusthof Classic 3.5 inch Paring Knife - This paring knife costs around $40 on its own. Knife is made with a small pointed blade that is great for peeling vegetables and small cutting jobs.

About the Knife Block, Sharpening Steel and Kitchen Scissors...

Oak Wusthof 17-slot knife block - If you buy one individually (beechwood instead of Oak) it will cost you around $40. Dimensions: 10" x 4.5" x 8.5." How to clean? Wipe Clean with Damp Cloth. Weight: 5.7 pounds.

Sharpening Steel 9 inch - This steel will cost you around $20 on its own. The 9 inch sharening rod is made with grooved steel and made with magnetic steel designed to attract metal fibers. (This preventing them from getting all over the kitchen).

Wusthof kitchen shears - Cuts food, flowers, paper, cardboard.

Does the Knife Block have Space for more Knives?

It does! The 17 slot knife block include storage space for the above listed knives and sharpening steel; plus additional space for 6 Steak Knives and 2 Prep Knives.

Note: If you store steak knives with a non-serrated edge, be sure to put them in the slots facing upward. This will keep from dulling the blades.

Cost Comparison...

Expect to spend around between $300 to $350 for Wusthof's Classic 8 piece set with block. The price is commensurate with quality, and Wusthofs Classic Series is their most popular line and one of their best. Remember, if you buy the Classic series you are buying top of the line Wusthof - hand forged steel, with 38 manufacturing steps. These knives are sharp and will hold their edge for a long time.
